Safe Estimates Without Contact
Here at Asheville Fence, we want to do our part in keeping our community and employees as safe as possible. If you are interested in an estimate appointment, but would like to not be present, we have made a video describing how you can mark where you would like for us to measure. If you have any questions please contact our office.
Asheville Fence provides free estimates and will come to your home or business to measure properly for a fence. However, if you would like to measure yourself for an estimate, here are some things to consider. But, you might want to make preliminary calculations before you call a fence builder in Asheville or Western North Carolina. Measuring will guide you in setting a budget and help you communicate with the fencing company.
Locate Property Lines
Look for Utility Lines and Obstructions
You’ll also need to locate underground utilities such as gas, power, cable, and telephone lines. In North Carolina, visit the Utility Notification Center or call 811. The center will notify someone to come to your property and mark the location of public utilities. It’s a free service.
Asheville Fence calls 811 for every contract we get, prior to installation. It is up to the customer to locate private utilities.

How to Measure Your Yard for a Fence
If you have located the property line and marked all the lines and other features, let’s start measuring.
- Mark corners with a rock, stake, or paint.
- Measure, in feet, the perimeter of the area, using the rocks or stakes as a guide. The tape needs to be pulled tight, so find a friend to help.
- Identify gate locations. We have a gate fabrication shop so depending on the material we can make a gate to fit the opening and slope.
- We can provide a job sketch form so you can draw your layout
