Privacy fences are customizable in height, ranging from 4-10 feet, but most commonly built at 6 feet tall. Close attention must be paid to the placement of the rails and posts, in order to ensure the pickets are sufficiently supported. This also contributes to the visual appeal of the fence.

We include the installation of side gates attached to your garage or side of the home. We also offer top caps for the posts, for a more refined finish, as well as faux posts, and drive gates with hardware and a secure steel frame.

Fencing a Sloped Yard: Racked or Stepped

Most yards around Asheville are not flat. That changes how a fence gets built, and it is the first thing we look at when we walk the line with you.

There are two ways to follow a grade.

Racked (also called raked) — the rails run parallel to the ground and the pickets stay plumb, so the fence follows the slope in one continuous line with no gap underneath. It suits wood privacy fence on gentle to moderate grades.

Stepped — each section stays level and drops down like a staircase, which leaves a triangle of space under the fence at every step. It is the usual answer on steep ground and for pre-formed panel styles that cannot flex. Those gaps can be filled or graded if you need the fence tight to the ground.

Which one your line calls for depends on how steep the run is, the material, and what the fence has to do. Rock is the other Western North Carolina variable: on ledge, post spacing has to be worked out at the site rather than off a drawing. Privacy Fence Questions, Answered

Do I need a permit, and how tall can the fence be?
We build privacy fence from 4 to 10 feet, and most are 6 feet tall. What you are allowed to put up at your address is a separate question — the City of Asheville, Buncombe County and your HOA can each have a say in height and placement. We handle the permitting on your behalf and check what applies before we build, so you are not the one reading the ordinance.
Which material gives the most privacy?
Wood and vinyl both close the line completely, so the choice usually comes down to finish and upkeep. Wood takes stain or exterior paint, so the colour stays yours to change. Vinyl does not need staining. We install both — and picket, split rail, ornamental aluminum and chain link if you decide privacy is not what you are after.
Will a privacy fence work on a sloped yard?
Yes, and that is most yards here. A fence follows a grade one of two ways, racked or stepped. Which one suits your line depends on how steep it is and what the fence is made of. There is a section further up this page that explains both.
Do you stain a new wood fence?
Yes. We stain with Wood Defender, and a wood privacy fence can also take exterior paint.
What does it cost to have you come look?
