That is the whole problem with ordinary yard fencing around a garden, an orchard, or a young planting: it marks the line, and the deer step over it. Deer fencing is built taller and tighter for exactly that reason. Asheville Fence Company installs it across Buncombe, Haywood, and Henderson counties, and we have been building fence in Western North Carolina since 1966.

Our typical deer fence

8-foot woven wire — tall enough that deer rarely bother trying it, and woven so there is no gap for a fawn to slip through. Heights and wire styles vary with the site; eight feet of woven wire is what we install most often.

Where it makes sense

Vegetable gardens and fruit trees are the usual reason people call. So are the larger wooded lots around Biltmore Forest, Arden, Fairview, and Weaverville, where deer move through every evening and the hostas never make it to July. Small farms use the same fence to keep deer out of hay and row crops. If you are replacing plantings every spring, a fence is cheaper than the plants.

How tall does a deer fence need to be?
Our typical build is 8-foot woven wire. A white-tailed deer can clear a six-foot fence without much of a run-up, which is exactly why ordinary yard fence does not solve the problem. Heights and wire styles vary with the site; eight feet of woven wire is what we install most often.
Will it keep deer out for good?
We will not promise you that, and it is worth being careful of anyone who does. A tall, tight woven-wire fence, closed at the corners and at the gates, is what actually changes what the deer do. But deer are persistent and no fence is a guarantee.
Does deer fence work on wooded or sloped land?
That is most of the ground it goes on here. Longer runs get laid out around the trees and the grade you actually have rather than in a straight line on a drawing, and the corners are braced so the wire stays tight season after season.
Can you put gates in it?
Yes — walk gates and drive gates, built to the same height, so the fence stays deer-tight where you come and go.
Do you fence gardens as well as property lines?
