Deck & Fence Painting

WE CAN PROTECT YOUR DECKS AND FENCES!

Constant exposure to rain, sun ,snow and debris, causes all sorts of damage to unprotected wood structures. A protective coating, helps reduce development of mold and mildew and is necessary to prevent your wood from warping, splitting. Chris Pressley, the lead painter for Asheville Contracting, has the knowledge and experience to guide you through the entire process of protecting your investment.

DECK PAINTING & STAINING

Should you paint or stain your deck?   Here are some of the pros of each method:

STAIN

  1. Stain retains the natural beauty of the wood.
  2. Stain is less slippery than paint.
  3. Stain comes in many colors.
PAINT
  1. You can paint your deck any color you want.
  2. Paint might be easier to clean.
  3. Paint can be more protective of wood unless you use a sealant.

FENCE STAINING & PAINTING

Painting or staining a wood fence can help your fence last longer and look better. Either one will extend the lifespan of your fence by giving it some protection against rot, insects, wear, and tear.

However, of the two we always recommend that you stain a fence rather than painting it.

Wood absorbs stain much deeper than it does paint. This means that paint, when it gets old, starts to chip, peel, and appear careworn, requiring near-immediate attention as soon as it starts to show signs of wear and tear. By contrast, stain will simply fade over time.

We’ve even heard stories of paint peeling off a fence in less than a year. Harsh winter weather, so common in Western North Carolina, can sometimes reduce the lifetime of a wood fence paint job even more. Of course the quality of the paint used will affect how long the paint lasts.

Cedar, in particular, does not work well with paint. Paint doesn’t allow the cedar to breathe, which means you’ll actually reduce the lifespan of the fence.

"We had our deck stained with Wood Defender and absolutely love the look! It penetrated very well and held up nicely. We believe we'll get many years of enjoyment from our deck in part due to Asheville Fence and Wood Defender."
